Certification Standards
What Stands Behind the NIEW-CPT Credential
Prospective students should be able to understand what the program teaches, what is required to earn the credential, and what standards certified members are expected to maintain.
The NIEW-CPT Is an Earned Credential
Enrollment alone does not make someone a NIEW Certified Personal Trainer. Students must complete the educational program and successfully pass the NIEW Certification Examination before earning the NIEW-CPT credential.
Certification should represent learning — not simply enrollment.
Standards Begin With the Education
The foundation of the NIEW-CPT is the NIEW Certified Personal Trainer Manual — Second Edition, a curriculum of 360 pages covering exercise science and the practical responsibilities of personal training.
Professional Standards Matter
NIEW emphasizes knowledge and competency, honesty and integrity, reliability, respect for clients, professional communication, confidentiality, professional boundaries, accurate representation of credentials, appropriate referral, and commitment to continued learning.
Certification Is Maintained, Not Simply Earned Once
NIEW-CPT certificates include an expiration date. After the first 12 months, active members complete 1.0 CEC — 10 hours — each year to maintain current certification status.
Where Can the NIEW-CPT Take You?
Graduates may pursue opportunities in gyms, health clubs, fitness studios, private training facilities, recreation and wellness settings, or other environments where the credential meets applicable requirements. Personal training can also provide a path toward independent training, developing your own clientele, or building a personal training business.
Standards Without Unnecessary Barriers
NIEW's goal is not to make certification expensive or complicated simply to make it appear more prestigious. Our goal is to maintain meaningful educational and professional standards while keeping the program accessible.
